FiRa Consortium Introduction

The FiRa name, which stands for “Fine Ranging”, highlights UWB technology’s unique ability to deliver unprecedented accuracy when measuring distance or determining the relative position of a target. Especially in challenging environments, UWB technology outperforms other technologies in terms of accuracy, power consumption, robustness of RF connections, and security.

The FiRa Consortium was founded by Bosch, HID Global, NXP Semiconductors, and Samsung Electronics to drive seamless user experiences using Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. FiRa supports the growth of an interoperable UWB ecosystem across chipsets, devices, and infrastructure services by developing standards and certifications.

FiRa Consortium Certification Program

The FiRa Consortium certification program is the first to provide baseline testing and certification, focusing on UWB's precise positioning and spacing measurement capabilities, which are key steps needed to promote device interoperability. The certification program is an important aspect of FiRa's vision to develop an open and interoperable ecosystem based on the use of UWB technology.

To carry a FiRa certified logo, devices must first be tested by an Authorized Test Lab (ATL) according to the FiRa device certification process. The device must meet the medium access control/physical interface transceiving (MAC/PHY/IOP) conformance requirements specified in the FiRa specification to demonstrate that the device complies with the relevant FiRa specification.  Products which are certified by FiRa may display the FiRa certified logo (below image), which helps consumers identify devices which are a part of the FiRa ecosystem.  It is not only an affirmation of the company's own R&D and production strength, but also enhances the company's brand positioning.

About FiRa Consortium

The FiRa Consortium is a member-driven organization dedicated to transforming the way we interact with our environment by enabling precise location awareness for people and devices using the secured fine ranging and positioning capabilities of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. FiRa does this by driving the development of technical specifications and certification, advocating for effective regulations and by defining a broad set of use cases for UWB.
