In the textile industry, there are two methods to evaluate the Colour Differences. One is visual method and the other is CMC method. The former method uses grey scale as evaluation standard. The observer compares the testing sample and standard sample based on grey scale directly to determine the grade of the colour difference under the special illuminant and environment. And the latter method adopts instrument to mensurate the CIELAB value, then calculate the colour difference values according to CIE 1976 L*a*b* equation.
Colour differences of fabric will influence appearance of garment, so evaluating colour differences is very important to control the fabric quality.The traditional test method for colour difference is mainly visual test. The results will be affected by observer’s subjective opinion, emotion, tiredness and different environment. So the test results will be changed by different observers using visual method. However, the CMC test method eliminates the factors caused by people, and reduces the error greatly, which make the test much more accurate and recur easily. So it benefits to control colour difference in trading and production.
However, with the coming of information ages, CMC colour difference test will be used more and more widely in textile industry.
