We are proud to have certified WEIL Hotel under the ESG Certification for Malaysian Hotels and Resorts program.
WEIL is the first hotel to receive this certification from us. It demonstrates its continued commitment to promoting environmental stewardship, social responsibility and good governance. This certification is also an important step in advancing sustainable hospitality across the country.

A framework aligned with global standards
The ESG Certification for Malaysian Hotels and Resorts program aligns with international environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria and builds upon ESG insights, best practices and audit data accumulated over the years. It provides a clear, comprehensive framework to evaluate the management of ESG issues within the industry, ensuring that hotels and resorts operate in an environmentally responsible, socially equitable and well-governed manner.
The program operates in collaboration with The Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) and Saimatrix Integrated, and is officially supported and endorsed by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC).
The journey toward certification
For WEIL Hotel, the path to certification reflected a year of dedicated effort. It began with a detailed assessment of practices to identify opportunities for improvement across all ESG dimensions.
This was followed by comprehensive staff training, continuous assessments and the implementation of meaningful enhancements throughout the hotel’s operations.

Demonstrating commitment to sustainability
As part of its ESG journey, WEIL Hotel implemented a range of initiatives that reflect its commitment to sustainability.
Environmental
- Introduced an energy-efficient system with high-efficiency HVAC units, heat recovery units, LED lighting and double-glazed windows
- Managed scheduled waste responsibly with segregation, storage and disposal procedures in line with national regulations
- Installed water filtration systems in all guest rooms to eliminate single-use plastic bottles
- Became the first Perak hotel to install an in-house food composting system, converting over 36,500 kg of food waste into organic compost annually
Social
- Provided continuous ESG training to all staff to build awareness and accountability
- Emphasized inclusivity, fair employment and meaningful community engagement
- Developed corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in collaboration with local stakeholders: tree planting, environmental education, eco-awareness campaigns and community empowerment
Governance
- Improved transparency, introduced data-tracking tools and regularly communicated progress to stakeholders to provide consistent reporting and measurable outcomes

Yu-Wei Liew, Managing Director of WEIL Hotel, said: “At WEIL, sustainability isn’t just something we do – it’s who we are. It’s a quiet commitment, thoughtfully woven into every decision, from the way we care for our people to how we protect our planet.
“Pursuing ESG certification felt like the natural next step. It gives structure to the values we’ve always lived by, ensuring that what we do for our guests and community truly stands up to global standards.
“That lies at the heart of WEIL and is in line with our brand purpose: to inspire, enliven and enrich the souls of our guests and neighborhood. Every choice, big or small, is guided by a simple truth, that genuine hospitality goes beyond service – it’s about care, empathy and creating a legacy that’s kind to both people and the environment.”
Dr Kenny Looi, Sub-Regional Business Assurance Manager for Malaysia and Singapore at SGS, added: “We congratulate WEIL Hotel on this remarkable achievement in attaining ESG certification for hotels and resorts.
“This reflects its proactive efforts and strong commitment to sustainability, and sets a new benchmark for the Malaysian hospitality industry.
