The Eurasia Tunnel in Türkiye stands out as a powerful example of infrastructure, connecting people, economies, and sustainable futures. Spanning 5.4 km beneath the Bosphorus Strait, this undersea road tunnel links the European and Asian sides of Istanbul, cutting average commute times significantly and saving commuters more than 23 million hours annually.
It is also one of the first projects in the world to achieve Blue Dot Network certification, for meeting rigorous international benchmarks across sustainability, safety and efficiency.
At SGS, we are proud to have served as an independent verifier for the BDN certification process, helping validate that the Eurasia Tunnel meets global expectations for transparency, resilience, and long-term value creation. BDN certification is a significant recognition of the Eurasia Tunnel’s impact and enhances its attractiveness as an investment. It helps demonstrate value for money over the asset’s lifecycle and offers reassurance to investors by validating the project’s alignment with global standards and ESG performance.
The tunnel’s contributions include the following achievements:
- Cleaner air: reductions of up to 46% in PM10 and PM2.5 pollutants
- Seismic safety: built to withstand earthquakes, with advanced lighting and monitoring systems
- Green power: solar energy reduces carbon emissions and operating costs
- Positive economic impact: $5.7 billion in savings and over 53,000 jobs supported from 2013 to 2042
Francesca Cerchia, Global Head of Climate Solutions at SGS, noted: “The Eurasia Tunnel proves that quality infrastructure can drive measurable social and environmental impact while unlocking economic opportunity.”
Watch the video on the BDN website to see how Türkiye is shaping the future of mobility.
This work also supports our IMPACT NOW for sustainability movement at SGS by advancing infrastructure that meets today’s ESG expectations and tomorrow’s global benchmarks.
