Our state-of-the-art chemical testing laboratory in Fairfield, New Jersey, USA, has expanded its range of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) testing services across a wide range of consumer goods.
PFAS are a diverse group of synthetic chemicals that, under the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) definition, contain at least one perfluorinated methyl group (-CF3) or perfluorinated methylene group (-CF2-) (without any H/Cl/Br/I atom attached). Their unique qualities of chemical inertness, durability and resistance to heat, oil, stains, grease and water mean they are used in a wide variety of consumer goods.
However, many of these so-called ‘forever chemicals’ are now linked to human and animal health issues such as thyroid disease, high cholesterol, liver damage, kidney and testicular cancer, reduced vaccine response and lower birth weights. Around the world, governments are responding with restrictions and prohibitions. These are currently often specific to individual PFAS (e.g. perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)) and/or product types (e.g. juvenile products), but the European Union is now considering a universal ban under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH).
PFAS are a key area of focus for us, and we provide a comprehensive range of solutions to help businesses stay compliant with the rapidly evolving PFAS regulations worldwide. At our Fairfield laboratory, we have recently expanded our PFAS testing capabilities to better support organizations in the US and globally. These services help safeguard both the environment and human health while ensuring full regulatory compliance.
