SG 123/25
Thailand has regulated two types of food contact plastic bags under two national standards.
In mid-2024, Thailand consulted over the use of TIS 1207-25XX (20XX) ‘Plastic bags for food’ and TIS 3022-25XX (20XX) ‘Microwavable food plastic bag for reheating’ as mandatory national standards for these food contact materials (FCM) and articles (SafeGuardS 108/24).
In November 2024, Thailand’s Ministry of Industry issued two announcements mandating two standards for two categories of food contact ‘plastic bags’:
- Announcement on the Establishment of Industrial Product Standards for Food Packaging, 2024 – mandates TIS 1027-2567 (2024), a standard for ‘plastic bags’ made from virgin or tertiary recycled polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) materials (single-layer plastic films used for food packaging) with details of the fork-spoon-plate symbol indicating that food contact is safe and does not pose a health hazard (Annex C)
- Announcement on the Establishment of Industrial Product Standards for Plastic Bags for Food Packaging for Heating in Microwave, 2024 – mandates TIS 3022-2567 (2024), an industrial product standard for ‘plastic bags’ for packaging food and reheating once in a microwave with details of the fork-spoon-plate symbol indicating that food contact is safe and does not pose a health hazard (Annex C).
Highlights of the standards in the two announcements are summarized in Table 1.
