ISO Updates Standard for Activity Toys – ISO 8124-4:2025

The International Organization for Standardization has published the third edition of its standard for activity toys used in the domestic setting, replacing the previous version published in 2014 (last amended in 2019).

ISO 8124-4 sets the physical and mechanical requirements for activity toys. The new edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 8124-4:2014), which had been technically revised and incorporated Amendments ISO 8124-4:2014/Amd.1:2017 and ISO 8124-4:2014/Amd.2:2019. It is largely based upon existing standards in the European Union (EN 71-8) and in the United States (ASTM F1148, ASTM F2729 and ASTM F2666).

Some of the main changes are as follows:

Standard title modified to reflect it not only covering swings, slides and similar activities toys, but all general activity toys
Definitions for ‘activity toys’, ‘barrier’, ‘declined plane’, ‘hand-gripping component’, ‘hand-grasping component’ and ‘resilient behaviour’ have been modified/added
Conformity with relevant requirements from ISO 8124-1 emphasized
Requirements have been added for materials to be resistant to degradation
General requirements for hardware, ropes, crush and shear points, hand-gripping/grasping points, handrails, etc. have been added
Certain requirements/test methods have been modified to aligned with EN 71-8, such as head and neck entrapment requirements, finger entrapments, toggle test, etc.
Requirements/test methods for slides have been updated
Requirements/test methods for swings have been updated to align with ASTM F1148 and EN 71-8
Requirements for see-saws enhanced
Requirements concerning operating instructions have been added
Warning requirements for paddling pools modified to remove symbol options
