SG 109/25
On April 9, 2025 Turkey’s Ministry of Trade published Official Gazette No 32865 which updates labeling requirements for consumer products containing animal derived materials. The regulation, effective June 9, 2025, applies to a wide range of consumer goods, including but not limited to textiles, footwear, gloves, bags, wallets, belts, watches, stationery, toys, furniture and carpets.
Products containing animal parts must clearly indicate the animal species (e.g., cow, sheep, pig) from which the material is sourced, and it must appear on the product label, packaging, or in an accompanying document. For products sold online or via remote communication tools, the animal-origin information must be displayed in the product description section and be accessible to the consumer prior to purchase. All information must be provided in Turkish, in a clear, legible, and non-misleading manner.
The regulation is currently in effect, and all businesses placing relevant products on the Turkish market must fully comply with the updated labeling requirements. The intention of the update and quick implementation is to prevent misleading marketing that promotes animal-origin materials as artificial, vegan, or synthetic leather and to ensure that consumers are not deceived by claims that obscure the true nature of a product’s composition.
