Significant revision to consumer safety performance specification for playground equipment for public use, ASTM F1487-25, has been published.

In June 2025, ASTM International released a revised consumer safety performance specification for playground equipment for public use, designated as ASTM F1487-25. This standard establishes updated safety and performance standards for a wide variety of public playground equipment, including dimensional criteria for clearance and use zones. The goal is to reduce the risk of life-threatening or debilitating injuries, such as those identified by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The standard defines public-use playground equipment as, “play structure for use in play areas of schools, parks, child-care facilities, institutions, multiple-family dwellings, private resorts and recreation developments, restaurants, and other areas of public use.”

The latest version of standard includes the following changes:

  • New definition added for ‘fully enclosed structure’
  • Updated exemptions for suspended components
  • Revised handrail height specification for wheelchair-accessible ramps
  • Added requirements for fully enclosed tube slides
  • Added requirements for fully enclosed structures
  • Added requirements for roofs that are an integral part of a fully enclosed structures
  • Added structural members of rotating equipment on components subjected to lateral loads
  • Added figures A1.68 to A1.72

The standard was developed by ASTM subcommittee F15.29 on Playground Equipment for Public Use and approved on April 15, 2025.
