ASTM has published a revised standard specification for fire safety for candle accessories, designated ASTM F2601-25.
In June 2025, ASTM International published a revised version of the standard specification for fire safety for candle accessories, designated ASTM F2601-25. The standard establishes minimum safety requirements for candle accessories intended for use with candles under normal conditions. The purpose is to reduce the risk of fire, personal injury and fatality associated with foreseeable hazards.
The standard defines a candle accessory as an “object designed, intended, or marketed for use with a candle.” This includes candle burners, candle holders, candle rings, etc.
The latest version of standard includes the following changes:
- Clarified that accessories containing adhesive, glue, solder or any other fastening material that could potentially melt or burn are not exempt from the flammability requirements. These accessories are subject to testing regardless, even if the remaining portion of the item is constructed from non-combustible materials
- Revised the performance requirement for candle burners, tealight holders and taper candle holders from shall not “break or crack” to shall not “deform”
- Added a definition for “deform” as a “change in shape or integrity, and includes melting, cracking, breaking, and distortions in shape”
- Updated the single and multiple candle tealight and taper candle holder performance test method as follows:
- Specified the number of samples to be tested and the required number of tests
- Revised the test procedure to require that the test candle(s) be burned to completion
The standard was developed by the ASTM Candle Products Subcommittee (F15.45) and approved on May 1, 2025.
