The new EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230, which replaces Directive 2006/42/EC, introduces significant updates to align with today’s digital industrial landscape. It entered into force on July 20, 2023 and becomes applicable from January 20, 2027, affecting machinery manufacturers, importers, distributors and end users across the EU.
There is no transition period – only a clear switch date – meaning no EU Declaration of Conformity under the new regulation can be issued before January 20, 2027.
This regulation introduces essential new requirements related to software, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, while expanding its scope to cover AI-enabled machinery. Six high-risk categories of machinery will require third-party conformity assessments by Notified Bodies. Even post-market software or firmware updates may necessitate reassessment and re-certification.
To prepare effectively, businesses should act now – especially when planning updates, new designs or digital safety integrations.
